AI is entering an era of corporate control - The Verge

Stanford HAI

Private investment in AI decreased for the first time in a decade. Global private investment in AI has been climbing for years but decreased by 26.7 percent from 2021 to $91.9 billion. in 2022. Training big AI models has environmental costs. A 2022 paper estimates that training a large AI language model called BLOOM emitted 25 times as much carbon as that of flying one passenger from New York to San Francisco and back. By comparison, OpenAI's GPT-3 was estimated to have a carbon cost 20 times that of BLOOM.

Network control by a constrained external agent as a continuous optimization problem

arXiv.org Machine Learning

Social science studies dealing with control in networks typically resort to heuristics or describing the static control distribution. Optimal policies, however, require interventions that optimize control over a socioeconomic network subject to real-world constraints. We integrate optimisation tools from deep-learning with network science into a framework that is able to optimize such interventions in real-world networks. We demonstrate the framework in the context of corporate control, where it allows to characterize the vulnerability of strategically important corporate networks to sensitive takeovers, an important contemporaneous policy challenge. The framework produces insights that are relevant for governing real-world socioeconomic networks, and opens up new research avenues for improving our understanding and control of such complex systems.

'Westworld' tackles the morality of technology, explains star Jeffrey Wright

HBO has spared no expense in bringing Jonathan Nolan's and Lisa Joy's expanded interpretation of Michael Crichton's cult 1973 film, Westworld, to life. The basic premise remains the same in that Westworld is a futuristic theme park where the rich can live out a Wild West fantasy by interacting with androids. In Hollywood terms, it's Jurassic Park (another Crichton creation) meets Deadwood (a classic and traditional HBO Western series). Westworld is the brainchild of Dr. Robert Ford (played by Anthony Hopkins), the creative director, chief programmer, and founder of the high-tech destination. Helping to bring this next-generation alternate reality world to life is Bernard Lowe (played by actor Jeffrey Wright of HBO's Boardwalk Empire and The Hunger Games).
